Surviving a mass casualty event as a bystander

Being present at a mass casualty event, not as a first responder but as a bystander or civilian. A mass shooting, a bombing, a collapse, a disaster. Surviving something where many people around you did not. The randomness of it and the weight of survival.

Surviving a mass casualty event as a bystander means carrying scenes that were never supposed to be survivable, alongside the arbitrary fact of your own survival. Why you and not others is a question with no answer that still demands one. People here understand living with unanswerable questions. It is something of a specialty.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.

You do not have to carry this alone.

Bridge of Hope Recovery is a free, anonymous, peer-led fellowship for trauma survivors. Meetings run throughout the week by phone, by video, and in person. No cost, no waitlist, no one asking for your real name.
