Institutional and systemic failure
Watching someone be harmed or brutalized by police or an institution
Being present when someone was beaten, restrained, detained, or harmed by police officers, guards, or institutional staff. Watching the power of an institution used against a person who could not stop it. Whether the person was a stranger or someone you knew, whether you said something or could not, what you witnessed left a mark.
Watching an institution turn its force on a person who could not resist leaves the witness holding something heavy. The sight itself, and what it revealed about power. You may replay whether you should have intervened, filmed, shouted, or stayed silent. Whatever you did in those seconds, you were not the one doing harm. What you carry from watching deserves care too.
Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.
You do not have to carry this alone.
