Loss and grief

Losing someone to addiction

Watching someone you love be consumed by addiction. Losing them slowly to it, or suddenly through it. The particular grief of loving someone whose addiction made them someone you did not always recognize. Including losses where they are still alive but the person you knew feels gone.

Loving someone through addiction means grieving in installments. The person they were, the person they might have been, the person who occasionally surfaces and disappears again. Whether they are gone or still living, the loss is real and largely invisible to others. People here understand mourning someone who is technically still here. It is one of the loneliest griefs there is.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.

You do not have to carry this alone.

Bridge of Hope Recovery is a free, anonymous, peer-led fellowship for trauma survivors. Meetings run throughout the week by phone, by video, and in person. No cost, no waitlist, no one asking for your real name.
