Losing your home, your savings, your business, or your financial security through economic collapse, bankruptcy, or financial catastrophe. The particular trauma of a life that was stable and then was not, through circumstances that felt completely outside your control.

Losing everything financially is grieved like a death but treated like a report card. The stability you built, the future you assumed, the identity of being someone who provides. All of it went down together. Shame loves this wound. It should not. Economic catastrophe says nothing about character, and nobody here will read it that way.

What can follow an experience like this

No two people carry the same experience the same way. These are some of the effects that people with this experience often describe. Having some of them, all of them, or none of them says nothing about how real what happened to you was.

Insomnia Difficulty falling asleep. Depression Not just sadness. Shame Not guilt about something you did. Anxiety The background hum of dread that is always there. Loss of meaning The questions that will not resolve. Housing instability Homelessness and housing instability are often what trauma produces. Financial ruin Financial ruin is often what trauma leaves behind. Loneliness This is different from pulling away.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.
