Abandonment

Being abandoned by a parent who was physically present but emotionally gone

A parent who never left but was never really there. Who lived in the same house but had no real relationship with you. Who you could not reach no matter how hard you tried. The particular grief of being abandoned by someone who was sitting across the dinner table.

Grieving a parent who is still alive and still in the house is a grief with no name and no ritual. You kept reaching, and the reaching kept failing, and eventually you learned to stop. That was self-protection, not coldness. The love you needed and did not get was real, and so is the mourning for it.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.

You do not have to carry this alone.

Bridge of Hope Recovery is a free, anonymous, peer-led fellowship for trauma survivors. Meetings run throughout the week by phone, by video, and in person. No cost, no waitlist, no one asking for your real name.
