Loss and grief

Losing a pet

The death of an animal companion. A loss that others sometimes minimize but that can be as devastating as any other. For many people a pet was the safest relationship they had, the most consistent presence, the one that asked nothing and gave everything. That loss deserves to be named here without qualification.

For many people an animal was the safest relationship they ever had, the one presence that asked nothing and judged nothing. Losing that is losing something enormous, whatever anyone else says about it being just a pet. Nobody here will say that. Grief for an animal companion gets full standing in these rooms.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.

You do not have to carry this alone.

Bridge of Hope Recovery is a free, anonymous, peer-led fellowship for trauma survivors. Meetings run throughout the week by phone, by video, and in person. No cost, no waitlist, no one asking for your real name.
