Abandonment
Losing contact with a sibling for years, not knowing if you'd find them again
Losing touch with a sibling for years, not through their death but through adoption, foster care, a family split, distance, or something else, without knowing if or when you would find them again. Including years spent searching, years spent not searching, and a reunion that may or may not have happened yet.
Some losses have an ending you can point to. This one usually does not, at least not for a long time. A sibling out there somewhere, alive as far as you know, with no way to reach them. People tend to treat this as smaller than losing a sibling to death, because technically there is still a chance. That chance is exactly what makes it so hard to put down.
Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.
You do not have to carry this alone.
Bridge of Hope Recovery is a free, anonymous, peer-led fellowship for trauma survivors. Meetings run throughout the week by phone, by video, and in person. No cost, no waitlist, no one asking for your real name.
