Emotional and psychological harm

Being psychologically harmed by a cult, high control group, or manipulative belief system

Being part of a religious group, organization, or community that used psychological manipulation, fear, isolation, or control to keep you compliant. Leaving and finding that the damage went deeper than you realized.

Leaving a high control group means grieving a whole world. Your people, your certainty, and sometimes your family, all at once. Outsiders ask why you stayed so long, which shows how little they understand what those systems do to a mind. People here will not ask that question. Getting out took more strength than staying ever did.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.

You do not have to carry this alone.

Bridge of Hope Recovery is a free, anonymous, peer-led fellowship for trauma survivors. Meetings run throughout the week by phone, by video, and in person. No cost, no waitlist, no one asking for your real name.
