An effect of trauma

Suicide attempts

Having tried to end your life, once or more than once. The attempt itself, and everything that came after it: the hospital, the people who found out, the people who did not, the way you were treated, and how you feel now about still being here. Some people feel relief. Some feel shame. Some feel nothing much and cannot say why. All of that is ordinary for this and rarely gets talked about.

If you are close to it now, stop reading and get hold of a crisis line or someone who can sit with you. This page is for afterwards, which is the part almost nothing is written about. Having been there is not something to be ashamed of and it is not the whole of who you are. A lot of people here have their own date and their own version of what came next, and it is a relief to be around people who do not need it explained.

It can sound like

“I tried to kill myself.” “I have attempted more than once.” “I am still here and I do not know how to feel about it.” “Nobody talks about what came after.” “I nearly did not make it.”

If any of those sentences live in your head too, you are in good company here.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.

You do not have to carry this alone.

Bridge of Hope Recovery is a free, anonymous, peer-led fellowship for trauma survivors. Meetings run throughout the week by phone, by video, and in person. No cost, no waitlist, no one asking for your real name.
