An effect of trauma

Financial devastation or losing everything

Financial ruin is often what trauma leaves behind. The exploitation that drained your accounts. The addiction that spent everything. The abuser who controlled your money and left you with nothing. The years lost to survival that cost you your earning potential. The systems that were supposed to help that did not. Poverty is not a personal failure. It is frequently the economic footprint of everything else on this list. If you are struggling financially because of what happened to you, this belongs here.

It can sound like

“I lost everything financially.” “I cannot pay my bills.” “I am starting over with nothing.” “My finances fell apart because of what happened.”

If any of those sentences live in your head too, you are in good company here.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.

You do not have to carry this alone.

Bridge of Hope Recovery is a free, anonymous, peer-led fellowship for trauma survivors. Meetings run throughout the week by phone, by video, and in person. No cost, no waitlist, no one asking for your real name.
