Being used for someone else's emotional needs without regard for your own

Being someone's therapist, emotional support, crisis manager, or caretaker in a way that was entirely one directional. Your needs never entered the equation. You existed to regulate, support, and absorb someone else.

Being someone's unpaid emotional caretaker, with no reciprocity and no exit, drains a person slowly enough that it is hard to name what happened. You may only see the shape of it now that you are out. One-directional relationships are a form of being used, and recovering your right to have needs of your own is legitimate healing work.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.

You do not have to carry this alone.

Bridge of Hope Recovery is a free, anonymous, peer-led fellowship for trauma survivors. Meetings run throughout the week by phone, by video, and in person. No cost, no waitlist, no one asking for your real name.
