Neglect
Being parentified, taking care of your parent instead of them taking care of you
You became the emotional support for a parent who should have been yours. You managed their feelings, their crises, their needs. You learned to read the room before you learned to read. Your needs came last or not at all because someone else's always came first.
Kids who managed a parent's feelings grow into adults everyone leans on and nobody thinks to check on. You may be the strong one, the fixer, the person who cannot fall apart because nobody ever held you while you did. Learning to receive care after a childhood of only giving it is slow work, and it goes better in company.
Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.
You do not have to carry this alone.
Bridge of Hope Recovery is a free, anonymous, peer-led fellowship for trauma survivors. Meetings run throughout the week by phone, by video, and in person. No cost, no waitlist, no one asking for your real name.
