An effect of trauma
Narcissistic traits
When someone grows up without adequate mirroring, with conditional love, or having to meet a caregiver's needs rather than their own, certain adaptations form. Grandiosity as a defense against shame. Difficulty with empathy because your own feelings were never modeled or met. A self that is either inflated or collapsed with little in between. These patterns cause real harm in relationships and they have real origins in what happened.
Owning this pattern honestly is harder than owning almost any other, because it involves harm flowing outward, not only inward. The fact that you are looking at it counts for something real. Empathy that was never modeled can still be built, and doing that work is one of the braver projects a person can take on.
