Physical violence

Being physically harmed as part of a religious or cultural practice

Physical harm that was justified or normalized by religious belief, cultural tradition, or family practice. Beatings framed as spiritual discipline. Rituals that caused physical harm. Things that were called sacred but left marks.

When harm arrives wearing sacred clothing, resisting it can feel like sinning and naming it can cost you your whole community. Many survivors spend years untangling what was faith from what was simply violence with a blessing on it. You are allowed to keep what was holy and refuse what hurt you. Others here are doing that same sorting.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and nothing here decides what is wrong with you, because nothing is wrong with you. Something happened to you. This page exists so that when you are ready, you can find people who understand it from the inside.

You do not have to carry this alone.

Bridge of Hope Recovery is a free, anonymous, peer-led fellowship for trauma survivors. Meetings run throughout the week by phone, by video, and in person. No cost, no waitlist, no one asking for your real name.
