An effect of trauma
Compulsive behaviors
When the nervous system is overwhelmed it reaches for relief. For some people that relief comes through behaviors rather than substances. Shopping, spending, gambling, sex, pornography, screens, work, exercise, cleaning, controlling the environment, eating beyond hunger. None of these are moral failures. They are the nervous system doing what nervous systems do, finding something that regulates the unbearable, and doing it again and again because it works until it does not. The behavior is not the problem. It is the solution that has started causing its own problems.
The behavior was never the point. Relief was the point, and the behavior was simply what delivered it when nothing else did. That is why willpower alone rarely fixes it, because the need underneath is real and still asking. Meeting that need in kinder ways is the actual work, and it is very hard to do alone.
